In September of 2003, my life changed forever - in fact, it changed the whole dynamics of our family.
My father was in an ATV accident that month that left him paralyzed at the T1 level. Sitting in the hospital, I remember thinking, what do we do? Is he going to be okay? What does it really even mean for his life to be paralyzed? What accommodations need to be made for something like this? What will happen to the family business?
But amazingly, everything started to fall into place. As dad continued through rehabilitation,We worked on home modifications, medical supply preparation.. you name it but then came the struggle of how we were going to get him home from therapy (nearly a 2 hour drive away).
When one of the therapists recommended United Access to us, we thought we were in To buy a car - we shortly found out that we were in for a long relationship.
We not only
Purchased our first accessible vehicle from United Access, but we have gone on to purchase 3 more vehicles from them. Dad is fully independent, goes to work everyday and enjoys visiting his children and grandchildren now that he has a vehicle. You see, coming into the doors of United Access, you begin to feel Like family. When you went in, the owners and general managers said hello. If we were there Over lunch, they would purchase us lunch. As a customer, they took care of everything so we could relax when Times were stressful. A few years after our first purchase, I joined the United Access staff. I learned the business from the other side of the door.
Not only did they care about me and my involvement with the company, but of all the people that came in the door. I was amazed by how many customers became employees. I quickly Learned how United Access hired many of my team members because there was a mutual Perfect fit to be in this industry. Not only does United Access hire wheelchair users, but nearly 25% of our team is either a customer or family member of a customer here. Not to mention, they Make all of the accommodations for our wheelchair-using team members to work Independently and to actively be a part of the day to day decisions within the team.
As a daughter of a quadriplegic, I became a customer of United Access; as a person with A big heart for the day to day belief in this company, I am a team member. United Access is more than an automotive adaptation company, it is a place where
Friendships begin through adaptive equipment. I hope to see you on the other side of the
Door soon.
